3.0 Introduction

Module 3 is the first of two modules that focus on the knowledge needed to implement the Conversations Approach.

This module provides information on the current recommendations from the American Academy for Pediatrics (AAP) for both safe sleep and optimal breastfeeding for healthy infants and provides information about the rationale for those recommendations. Knowing what is recommended and why provide the beginning of the dialogue with families.

Objectives for Module 3

• Articulate the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations for safe sleep and breastfeeding
• Explain the rationale for each recommendation
• Understand the relationship between breastfeeding and safe sleep in reducing risk of sleep-related deaths
