We honor the memory and celebrate the accomplishments of Robert Baumiller,
founding Director of the National Center for Education in Maternal and
Child Health (NCEMCH). Established in 1982 at Georgetown University with
support from the federal maternal and child health agency, NCEMCH evolved
from a genetics information clearinghouse into a leading national education
and information resource for the maternal and child health community.
The origins of the MCH Library are rooted in NCEMCH, and its collection
of a century's worth of historic documents as well as state-of-the-art
knowledge on maternal and child health. In addition to launching NCEMCH,
Father Baumiller was Director of the Division of Genetics at Georgetown
University Medical Center. He left Georgetown University in 1991 to become
dean of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Detroit Mercy.
From 1995 until his death, Father Baumiller held the positions of associate
dean of health programs and professor of biology and philosophy at Xavier
University, Cincinnati, Ohio. Father Baumiller's gift for nurturing a
university-based, nonpartisan organization dedicated to improving the
health of children and families throughout the nation, was an inspiration
to all of us who had the privilege of working with him.
